Project Description:

The objective of this project is to execute the design and construction of a replacement storm sewer pipe. The project involves managing several risks during the design phase in a meticulous manner. Additionally, careful planning is required to effectively handle and resolve various unique and site-specific challenges. These challenges encompass factors such as the presence of an existing railway, high ground water conditions, and the presence of utilities both above and below the surface. Proper mitigation strategies and proactive measures will be implemented to address these challenges.

Background:

The Neff Street storm sewer outlet, situated at the Weir Canal, has been identified for replacement. This particular pipe is responsible for collecting urban runoff. However, during heavy rainfall, the City faces flooding issues caused by an obstruction that hinders the drainage process of the storm sewer system.

To address this problem, the City enlisted the services of ASI Divers in August 2022. Their task was to conduct an underwater CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) video inspection. The inspection revealed substantial blockages in various locations throughout the storm pipe, impeding flows to the outlet which ultimately resulted in the need of replacement of the sewer.

External Support:

In April 2023 the City retained Associated Engineering (Ont.) Ltd. to complete the design solution for the Neff Street Storm Outlet. Associated Engineering has provided engineering consulting services to municipalities within the Niagara Region for over 25 years. The Niagara based office contains engineers, technologists and technicians that provide exceptional service and experience to assist with the various challenges of this project.

Approved Budget:

Total budget approved: $300,000

Estimated Completion:

December 2023 (Design)

March 2024 (Construction)
